General Computer Support
For non-research related computer support please contact the FAS Computer Services Help Desk at 6-2727 or fascs@fas.harvard.edu . Email
The standard email configuration in EPS is for a user to have a primary email account through FAS and an EPS alias that directs mail to the FAS account. In cases where an FAS account is not available or appropriate a primary EPS account can be established. Requests for primary EPS accounts should be sent to the EPS Lab Director. The EPS email server provides virus filtering on all mail. Anti-virus and spam filtering should also be enabled on the FAS system at the following url: http://www.fas.harvard.edu/computing/myaccount/ . The recommended email client for FAS email is Thunderbird v2. The Thunderbird client provides effective secondary spam filtering and is available at the url above. EPS will continue to provide email forwarding service for six months after someone leaves EPS.

FTP Server
EPS maintains a Departmental FTP server for use in sharing large files with colleagues and enabling remote access to files. FTP accounts are automatically set up for all faculty and staff. Users may also establish sub-accounts for specific uses (collaborations, etc.) and control the level of access associated with these accounts. Please contact George Planansky for more information or to request an account.

Please be aware the mpg files of all EPS Colloquia are available on the FTP server. If you would like access to these please contact George Planansky.

Video Streaming
EPS provides streaming of video files of key presentations and job talks. If you have a file that you would like to make available please contact George Planansky.

Plotting and Printing
EPS provides department-wide access to high performance Phaser printers and a wide bed HP plotter for conference posters, etc. Please follow this link for instructions on how to access these resources.

VNC Access
VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is a technology that provides the ability to view, and control the desktop/display of a remote computer system. It is cross platform, meaning there are VNC servers and clients for Windows, Mac, Linux and so forth. VNC only allows you to view the display and control the mouse and keyboard, as if you were sitting in front of the computer. Please follow this link for a “how-to” document on setting this up. Please contact Matt Nicholson for more information.

Departmental Loaner Computers and AV Equipment
EPS maintains a number of laptop computers (IBM and Macs), LCD projectors, a digital camera and a conference call telephone unit for temporary use by members of the department. To inquire about availability and reserve please call the main department number at 617-495-2351. Items borrowed must be signed out and signed back in upon return. If you intend to take any item out of state you must inform us at the time of the reservation so that we can make appropriate insurance arrangements.

Instructional Computing Facility
EPS maintains an Instructional Computing Facility to support teaching and student research. The ICF lab room in Geological Museum 103C has 13 graphics workstations -- 12 student, 1 instructor's -- running Windows XP Pro. To promote both instructor-led and peer-to-peer visual analysis and discussion, workstation and a laptop dock video outputs are connected by a matrix switch to twin high-resolution projectors.
