UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN COMPUTATIONAL GEOMORPHOLOGY
We are developing high-performance numerical methods for modeling landscape evolution to better understand how rivers shape the Earth's surface. Several projects exist for motivated undergraduates with programming experience.

Museum Assistant - Geological Museum
An "army" of museum assistants is needed to electronically catalogue and photograph our extensive geological collections.
Assistant would work at least 6-10 hours a week, $10/hour, work-study preferred.

Research Assistant- Seismology Laboratory
Possible projects include comparison of geology and seismic data in
Japan, and search for continents/oceans in the Earth's deep
interior. Assistant should be an enthusiastic student with interest
in Earth, data analysis, and computer programming. Previous computer
programming experience would be desirable, but not necessary. Assistant will work at least 6 hours per week, $10/hour.

Research Assistant- Langmuir Group
Reasearch Assistant needed for sample preparation and geochemical analysis of
rocks from young volcanoes at ocean ridges and island arc regions. Sample
preparation includes preparation of rock powders and necessary containers,
chemical dissolution in an ultra-clean lab, and, if there is time and interest,
geochemical analysis using ICP_MS mass spectrometer and direct current plasma
optical spectrometer. Rocks from the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic and Lau Basin
in the south Pacific are the focus of the work. Assistantt would work at least 5-10 hours per week, $10/hour; work-study preferred.

Laboratory assistants sought for the Noble Gas Laboratory. Tasks include general laboratory operations support and sample preparation. Current experiments focus on understanding the composition of comets, the glacial history of Antarctica, understanding the timescales of climatic and biotic changes associated with the K-T impact. Assistants will be trained; no previous experience necessary.

For Seniors: SEACAMP- Science Instructor
SEACAMP is a non-profit organization offering a unique marine science/SCUBA residential camp for teenagers 12-17 and a marine science daycamp for youths 10-13. Established in 1966, it is located near the most extensive coral reef in the continental United Staes, in the middle of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. SEACAMP offers courses in marine science, SCUBA diving, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, photography, and camp newspaper. Science Instructor Description: Course topics include marine biology, coral reef ecology, ichthyology, animal behavior, invertebrate biology, shark biology, fisheries science, environmental science, marine aquaria, and marine research. Courses taught in local habitats which include mangroves, coral reefs, tide pools, and shallow marine systems. Each course involves lab work, lecture, and field trips by boats and vans. Participate in all camp functions and assist in camper supervision as assigned. Candidates must be 21 years or older and hold a Bachelors degree in Science or related field and have an interest in teaching teens about the environment in a tropical residential camp setting. Candidates must also hold a valid driver's license and have an excellent driving record. Candidates must be comfortable in the water and have strong boating and aquatic skills; SCUBA certification is preferred, but not required. SEACAMP provides a comprehensive experiential training program. Employment dates are May 23-August 31, May 23-December 20, or year-round.
Benefits include salary, room and board, opportunities for both SCUBA diving and snorkeling, sailing, and windsurfing. Instructors also gain practical experience teaching environmental sciences.
